It has become the standard worldwide to don a protective face mask in almost all group situations to prevent the spread of COVID 19 pathogens. While this is key to our physical health, it also poses new challenges for individuals that are deaf or hard of hearing both socially and in the classroom. The Moog Center for Deaf Education put speech perception to the test with various face coverings with and without the assistance of remote microphone technology (Phonak Roger). Their results are quite supportive of continued use of remote microphones to assist speech understanding in our newly masked world in most scenarios.
